It is a big mistake saying that the law which is the Ten Commandments is obsolete. Abolishing the law and teaching not to obey them will not complete the task of fulfilling the Great Commission. The law is actually the most important part to make disciples as well.
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." Matt 28:18-20 NIV
There is one very interesting to take note of what Jesus said in the scriptures above. He said, “Go and make disciples… and teaching them to OBEY everything I have commanded you”.
No doubt, the teaching to obey the law which is the Ten Commandments is the most distinguishing aspect in everything Jesus have commanded to disciples all nations. In fact Jesus did not do away, destroy or abolish the law he expound clearly the negative significance of disobeying and not teaching them and the positive significance of obeying and teaching them.
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. (Mat 5:17-19)
In Chapter 5 and 6 of Matthew, Jesus said, “You have heard of long ago”… “But now I tell you”, it means the law has given more emphasis and importance. Therefore, the law “But now I tell you” is the law that must be obey and teach which is the vital element of the Great Commission as well as in making disciples.
A true follower or a disciple of Christ must do the same as what Jesus did to the law.Obey them and teach them. It is exactly and the surest way to fulfill the Great Commission.
